What is Parliament?
Parliament is made up of three parts: The HOUSE OF COMMONS, the HOUSE OF LORDS and the MONARCH. Each branch is important.
HOUSE OF COMMONS:
the house of commons is made up of MP'S that have been ELECTED BY THE PUBLIC. Because of this, this means that they have THE MOST POWER.HOUSE OF LORDS: The house of lords seats FOUR DIFFERENT TYPES OF PEOPLE. They have the HEREDITARY PEERS, which are people that have inherited their title, (E.G: Lords, Sirs'). There are only 92 left in the House of Lords. Then, they have the LIFE PEERS, theses are people who have been in a certain profession for a great number of years. For example, ALAN SUGAR OR "MAGGIE" THATCHER. After these, the BISHIOPS OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND follow. Their main purpose is to add religious views. The LAW LORDS are the last type left and there are only TWELVE of these left. They're the top judges in the country, and usually have a oxbridge education behind them.
AS OF 2009, THE HOUSE OF LORDS WILL BE KNOWN AS THE SUPREME COURTSTHE MONARCH: This is bascially the queen, or the ruler at the time. This is just to represent ROYAL APPROVAL. But, as we are a democracy, we don't actually need her approval.
Under the Royal Assent Act, royal approval is given as long as a speaker in both houses of parliament stands up and reads out the title of the bill.[/blockquote]

European Law is the highest form of law, surpassing the rulings that the House of Commons make. However, they do not pass laws in all of the areas. (Tort, criminal and property).
As we, England, are part of the EU (European Union) we have to follow the laws that they set. When a new law is passed, each country is given a certain amount of time to implicate that law in to their current systems.
Two examples of law that EL has brought to our country - and others: The Sex Discrimination Act of 1975, and the 48 hours a week working hours. This last law stated it was illegal for an employer to make you work for longer than 48 hours...although, you could choose to work longer if YOU SO DESIRED.
The UK joined the European Union in 1973, and from here on after, this meant that we had a higher form of law.
CASE EXAMPLE:
In Factortame (1991), Spanish Fishermen were fishing in British waters and the British fishermen complained about it, claiming that this affected the amount of fish they were collecting. In responce to their complaints, the Parliament passed the Merchant Shipping Act in 1998. This stated that only British fishermen could fish in the British wates.
The Spanish fishermen challanged this, claiming that it was illegal under European Law. The house of lords (court) decided that the merchant shipping act was illegal, due to this. The end result? The Spanish won the case.

Parliament can pass any law that they see fit. It can also revoke any law, or alter them. Parliament CANNOT bind it's successor, so that any future parliament does not have to follow the laws created by the previous parliament.
Parliament is the NUMBER 1 law maker in this country, APART FROM EUROPEAN LAW (EL does not support Parliamentary Supremacy.)
The reason that Parliament is supreme is due to ther fact that the PARLIAMENT IS DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED in to power by the Government. No one is allowed - or even has the authority - to overrule a law made by parliament, with the exception of European Law.
