SO... REMEMBER THAT ADVERT THAT MADE YOU CRY? THE ONE WHICH TELLS YOU HOW LITTLE CHILDREN ARE SUFFERING OR THE ONE THAT TELLS YOU HOW ANIMALS GET ABUSED? YEAHH, THOSE ARE PRESSURE GROUPS.
Pressure groups are an organisation that support a certain cause, or to help provent a certain cause. These are NOT political parties, they don't wanna rule the country or anything, but they do want to influence the GOVERNMENT. They do this by bringing issues forwards to the public (for example, those adverts). They do this in the hope that they can get laws and acts EDITED AND CHANGED in their favour. For example, they changed the law, and LOWERED THE AGE FOR HOMOSEXUAL PEOPLE TO HAVE "RELATIONS", with consent. It used to be 21, it went down to 18 in 1994, and now it's finally at 16. They are also responsible for the HUNTING ACT OF 2004, which DISALLOWED hunters to hunt for foxes with the aid of dogs.
Sometimes, though, they also try to prevent a change in the law from taking place. They try many different methods; the sad tv ads, and they can try to influence an mp, in hopes that they'll take interest, and bring it up in one of the houses of parliament.
SO... WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?
They usually do, and can, raise important issues.
UHH IS THAT IT? WEELL, DISADVANTAGES NEXT?
Some people claim that pressure groups are trying to put ideas in to peoples head, and get the law changed, even though the public doesn't agree with their cause.
